Top tips for finding a cheap flight out of Los Angeles (LAX)

Buy your ticket during the Goldilocks Window

We maintain that there’s no such thing as the cheapest days of the week to buy airline tickets, but we firmly believe in the Goldilocks Window. That’s the period when airfare tends to be cheapest—roughly 1-3 months before a domestic flight and 2-8 months before an international flight. Keeping your travel plans flexible in this window helps ensure you’ll get a sweeter deal.

But if your travel plans are set in stone, or your trip will be during the peak tourist season, then we strongly suggest you start looking at fares even further in advance. Planning a getaway over the December holidays, for instance? Begin your airfare search in July.

And, while people seem to talk a lot about last-minute deals, they’re actually not as common as you’d think. On the contrary, airfare typically jumps at the 21-day, 14-day, and 7-day points, so try to book your flights before then.

Make the Greek Islands Trick work for you

Maybe you have your heart set on a vacation spot, and you’ve been diligently tracking airfare in the hopes that the price will drop—but it’s not budging. Before you give up on your travel dreams, give the Greek Islands Trick a go. Say, for instance, flying from LAX to Santorini is stuck at $1,500, but you found a roundtrip flight from LA to London for $520. Even when you book a roundtrip London-to-Santorini ticket for less than $200, you’re still saving a bundle.

The idea is to get as close to where you want to go as cheaply as you can—in this case, Los Angeles to Europe—and then book a separate ticket (which could be by low-cost airline, train, or even boat) to get the rest of the way. Yes, this method requires a little more logistical planning on your part. And? The savings can be enormous.

Consider nearby (and faraway) airports

If you live in Los Angeles, you probably already look beyond LAX when you’re making travel plans. But along with looking at fares from other LA-area airports (like Burbank or Orange County), you might also consider looking at fares from airports further afield—even some that are downright far away.

With so many airlines juggling so many flights every day, there are occasionally gigantic price drops on flights from airports all over the place. If you’re looking at great deals in general, rather than just those from LA-area airports, something like a $63 roundtrip flight from Atlanta to Chile might catch your eye. Sure, you’ll need to book a separate flight from LAX to Atlanta, which are sometimes under $200, but you’re still saving hundreds over getting a ticket from Los Angeles directly to Chile.

Plan trips when airfare is cheaper

Anyone who’s able to be flexible with their travel plans knows that’s a great way to travel for less. Traveling during a destination’s shoulder seasons, usually spring and fall, makes for an excellent balance of lower prices than peak season and better weather than low season. And, if bad weather isn’t a concern, traveling during the low season means even lower prices.

But not everyone has the luxury of flexibility. Summer is popular for many reasons, not least the warm weather and school break schedule. High demand for flights means higher ticket prices, so if your flexibility is limited, at least try to schedule flights for the days when it’s cheaper to fly (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays) and avoid the days when it tends to be more expensive to fly (Fridays and Sundays).

Set up email fare alerts

Keeping track of constantly changing ticket prices is a time-consuming project, so we recommend automating some of it. Sign up for fare alerts for any itinerary you’re looking at, and you’ll get an email when the price changes by a certain amount or drops into your target range. By doing this several months before your planned trip, you’ll be able to watch as prices fluctuate and have more confidence in booking a great deal when you see one. Remember that if you’re looking at multiple itinerary options or keeping your travel plans flexible, you’ll have to set up a separate fare alert for each one.

Los Angeles International Airport is a major hub airport for Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines; the operating base for Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines; and a focus city for JetBlue (among more than 70 airlines serving the airport). There’s an average of 700 daily nonstop flights to destinations all over the world from LAX, including 91 international airports in 46 countries, so chances are very good that you’ll be able to get where you’re going with one connection.

There’s also a satellite building from the TBIT with additional gates, known as the West Gates at Tom Bradley International. In addition, there’s a very small Regional Terminal that’s unconnected to any of the other airport buildings.

The Terminal 3 Complex is connected to Terminal B and the West Gates via an inter-terminal shuttle, and Terminals 4-5 are connected to the Regional Terminal via a separate shuttle. There are also walkways (both above- and underground) linking Terminals 4-8 and Terminal B.

Note that a massive, ongoing construction project means some parts of certain terminals are temporarily closed, and things listed here may change without notice. You can check on construction updates here, including details for each individual terminal.

  • Terminal 4: All gates in Terminal 4 are served by American Airlines, and American Airlines passengers departing from Terminal 5 or Terminal B may also need to check in at Terminal 4. Dining options include La Provence Patisserie and Cafe, Campanile, Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, and Homeboy Cafe, and there’s a Duty Free shop as well. American Airlines has an Admirals Club and one of their premium Flagship Lounges in Terminal 4.

  • Terminal 5: Some American Airlines flights depart from Terminal 5, but it’s primarily home to JetBlue and Spirit. There are several local souvenir shops here, as well as a Duty Free and an FAO Schwarz. Food options include Monsieur Marcel, Donburi Bistro, and Lemonade. There is also an American Admirals Club in Terminal 5.

  • Terminal 6: There is another Duty Free shop in Terminal 6 along with several souvenir shops. Dining options include Point the Way Cafe, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Earthbar, and Blu2O Bar. Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge and an Alaska Airlines Lounge are both in Terminal 6, as is a Gameway gaming lounge.

  • Terminal 7: All of the gates in Terminal 7 are served by United Airlines or United Express. Food options include Rolling Stone Bar & Grill, Ashland Hill, B Grill by BOA Steakhouse, and Loteria. There’s a Duty Free shop here, as well as Pier 7 and a Book Soup bookstore. United has a Polaris Lounge in Terminal 7 in addition to a United Club.

  • Terminal 8: Terminal 8’s gates are also entirely dedicated to United Airlines or United Express. There’s a Stella Bar and Engine Co. No. 28 along with a couple of fast food spots.

  • Terminal B (Tom Bradley International Terminal) and West Gates: This is LAX’s biggest terminal and the primary international terminal. Dining and shopping options are extremely plentiful throughout Terminal B, with multiple Duty Free shops, luxury boutiques, airport staple shops, and a huge variety of local, fast food, and chain restaurants. The lounges in Terminal B are operated by American Express Centurion, Emirates, Korean Air/SkyTeam, oneworld Alliance, Qantas, and Star Alliance.

How early should I arrive to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) before my flight?

Generally speaking, travelers on domestic flights are told to arrive at an airport two hours before departure. For international flights, it’s three hours. But, depending on the airport and your specific travel plan, you may not need to get there that early—or, in the case of an airport as gigantic as LAX, you may need to give yourself even more time. Here are a few things to consider:

  • How big is the airport? LAX is massive. There are nine terminals, most of which have their own check-in and security areas, but not all of them are interconnected by walkways or shuttles. To make things more confusing, there are ongoing construction projects in several terminals that may make getting from point to point less straightforward than it would otherwise be.

  • Where is your gate? The distance from each security checkpoint to the gates varies, and in some cases, the terminal where you check in and go through security isn’t the same one you’ll fly out of, which means a longer distance to your gate. It may take 10 or more minutes to walk to the furthest gates, and if you need to take a shuttle between terminals, that may be another 20 minutes or more.

  • Do you need to check in or check a bag? Airlines have cutoff times before departure times, after which passengers can no longer check in (about 30-60 minutes before a flight) or check luggage (about 45-60 minutes before a flight). Checking in at home can save time, but if you need to check in at the airport for some reason—or if you need to check a bag—be sure to give yourself plenty of extra time.

  • How busy is the airport? Not only is LAX huge, but it’s also among the busiest airports in the country. The airport’s website doesn’t post real-time security wait times, but the standard lines usually take at least 20 minutes. If your flight is around a holiday, during the peak summer season, or on one of the busier days to travel, the time needed to get through security and to your gate will be even greater.

At the very least, it’s a good idea to get to LAX at least two hours before a flight—and if it's peak travel time, particularly during construction, you may want to give yourself at least three hours before even a domestic flight.
