Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Boston (BOS)

Book in the Goldilocks Window

While we maintain that there’s no specific day of the week when airline ticket prices drop, there is a window within which you can book to find the best deals. We call it the Goldilocks Window—when it’s not too far out from your trip and not too close to your departure date. This just-right period is about 1–3 months before a domestic flight and 2–8 months before an international flight.

For anyone booking during peak travel season, start looking even earlier. Same goes if your dates are not flexible. If, for instance, you’re hoping to travel to Boston for the Fourth of July, you should start looking for flights in January. Last-minute deals are few and far between during busy travel seasons, with fare jumps happening 21, 14, and 7 days in advance of flights. Don’t wait until a month before your trip to book, and definitely don’t wait until a week or two out.

Use the Greek Islands Trick

Even if you’re checking fares daily, some flights never seem to get any cheaper. Before you give up on a summer family vacation to Boston, try our beloved Greek Islands Trick. We use it to get to the notoriously expensive Greek Islands for less, but it can be used anywhere.

Basically, you try to get as close to your final destination as possible for the lowest price, and from there look for a budget airline, train, or other mode of transit for the last leg. If you really want to fly from Phoenix to Boston, look for flights to New York , Philadelphia, or DC instead. From there, you can take a train, bus, or rent a car. Yes, it involves more work on your part to plan this type of trip, but you could save a few hundred bucks.

Search alternative departure airports

Like the Greek Islands Trick, this tip involves being flexible with your airport departure preferences. Let’s stick with the Phoenix example. If you live in Phoenix, chances are you rarely search for flights from other airports. Why would you, when you have such a large airport right there? But we see incredible deals from airports big and small every day. Before giving up on a flight, check prices out of Tucson or Flagstaff. The extra drive could save you a bundle of money.

Fly when it’s cheaper

Summer is one of the busiest travel seasons in the US, and Boston is no exception. Not only are kids on summer break, but warm weather makes for happy vacationers. We like to travel during shoulder seasons, the periods on either side of a busy season. You typically get fewer crowds, cheaper flights, and while weather isn’t always as perfect in high season, it’s usually still decent. In Boston, shoulder season is April–May and September–November. You’ll likely find the best deals in January and February, when most visitors stay away due to cold temperatures and lots of snow. But if you don’t mind a chill or plan to do mostly indoor activities, this is a great time to save.

If you want to travel during the summer or over St. Patrick’s Day, when Boston is busy, try to fly on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday, which are generally the cheapest days to fly. Unsurprisingly, Friday and Sunday are the most expensive.

Set alerts for specific trips

Flight alerts are perhaps the easiest way to save on a trip. Simply set a flight alert for your specific dates—being sure to set a few if your dates or airports are flexible—and wait for an email telling you prices have dropped. Do this well in advance of your trip to take advantage of the deals that pop up during the Goldilocks Window.

Boston receives nonstop flights from more than 70 cities all over the US and the world every day. From most places around the globe, you can reach Boston with just one stop, likely in Europe or Istanbul.
