Top tips for finding a cheap flight to London

Book in the Goldilocks Window

People always wonder when the exact perfect time is to book the cheapest flight, and the truth is there is no magic day. Flight prices change all the time. But there is a window when you have a pretty great shot at finding a deal. We call this the Goldilocks Window, the time period that’s not too close and not too far away from your departure date. That’s about 1-3 months ahead of domestic flights and 2-8 months before an international flight.

London, like most of the world, is busiest from June–August. It’s also very popular in December. That means you should start looking for flights for a summer trip in December and flights for December in June. We’ve seen that flights pretty consistently jump 21, 14, and 7 days ahead of departure, so make sure to book before those dates.

Use the Greek Islands Trick

The Greek Islands Trick is when you get as close to your final destination as possible for the cheapest price, then find a budget airline flight or book a train for the final leg. We call it the Greek Islands Trick because the islands are almost always expensive to visit, and there are great deals to be found if you fly to London or another major city first, then book a budget flight. But the trick can be used for any destination, even a hub like London.

If you want to visit London during an expensive time, play around with other European cities. Is Dublin cheaper? Or Paris? From there, you can take a train, budget airline flight, or even drive. Getting to Europe is usually the most expensive part. This trick requires a bit more work but could save you a ton of money.

Search alternative departure airports

Depending on where you live, you’re probably used to checking flights from nearby airports. If you live in Miami, you probably check flights from Fort Lauderdale automatically and have maybe even searched for flights from Tampa. But what about other states? We see astonishing deals all the time from New York, Atlanta, LA, and plenty of smaller airports too.

If you see a $202 roundtrip fare from New York to London, even if you live nowhere near New York, it could be worth another flight to get there. Even if you add a $200 flight from your home city to New York, you could still save a few hundred dollars on your total flight price. It requires a bit more planning, but some deals are worth it.

Fly when it’s cheaper

We know that summer and December are busy times to visit London, so naturally, it’s cheaper to fly during other times of the year. Shoulder seasons, like April and May or September–November, are great times to visit and find cheaper flights. January and February are even cheaper months to fly.

If you are going to travel during peak season, try to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Those are the cheapest days to fly, while Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive.

Set alerts for specific trips

Keeping track of flight prices can take time, and often you can miss great deals. Setting a flight alert takes the effort off your hands. Simply set up a fare alert for your itinerary, then wait for an email that says your fare has dropped. We recommend setting up alerts ahead of the Goldilocks Window to get the best deals.

London sees about 30 million visitors per year, and it has six airports, including two major international airports. This popular destination is also one of the easiest to reach. There are direct flights multiple times per day from at least 25 US airports. And from most airports in the US, you can reach London with just one connection.

Frequently asked questions about flying to London

When is the high season in London?

Like many places around the world, summer, especially July and August, is the peak travel season in London. This makes sense, as kids are out of school and people generally have more time to travel. December is also a popular time due to London’s many fantastic Christmas markets and the fact that the city is always decked out for the holidays and known as a shopping destination.

When is the best time to visit London?

London’s best weather happens from May to October. To avoid late summer crowds, travel in June when temperatures are typically in the low 70s by day and 50s at night. September and October are also great times to visit, and the later into that period you get, the more colorful the leaves on the trees in the city’s many parks.

January–March is the least busy time to visit. While the weather is chillier and often gray or drizzly, winter in London is not as cold or snowy as much of the Northeast or Midwest in the US. So if you don’t mind a little chill, travel during this period to avoid the crowds and get some of the best deals.

How many airports are there in London?

There are six airports in London: London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), London City (LCY), London Luton (LTN), London Stansted (STN), and London Southend (SEN).

Heathrow is London’s largest airport and one of the busiest in the world. This is where most flights from the US land, and the airport most likely to have deals. It’s also the easiest international airport to reach from the city, and the Underground train serves three terminals.

London Gatwick is the other major airport in the city and the other option for flights from the US. This airport is about 25 miles from London’s city center.

The other airports operate flights around Europe and often serve budget carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet. Stansted is especially popular for budget flights. All airports in London have some sort of public transit option to reach the city, whether it's the tube or an express train.

Which airport is the closest to London?

London City is the only airport in London actually located in the city. It’s in the Docklands area, about six miles from the financial district. This airport operates flights around Europe and the UK. You can take the Docklands Light Railway to the Bank station in about 20 minutes. A taxi or Uber from the airport will take about 30 minutes and cost about $50.

The closest airport with flights from the US is London Heathrow. From the airport, you can take the Piccadilly Line on the Underground metro, which stops in several locations in central London. The ride will take from 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your stop. Tickets are around $7. You can also take the Heathrow Express, a direct train from the airport to Paddington Station. It takes about 15 minutes and costs about $30.

How long is the flight to London?

From New York City, a direct flight to London takes seven hours. It’s about the same from other East Coast cities. From Chicago, a direct flight is seven hours and 45 minutes. From cities in the South, like New Orleans, and Dallas, flights range from 9-10 hours. And from California and elsewhere on the West Coast, flights are from 9.5–10.5 hours. Of course, many flights from smaller US cities will have a layover, which will increase flight time.
